Why Retention Gets Worse When the Heating Comes On

Central heating strips indoor humidity, slows cyanoacrylate cure, and creates ghost bonds. An October checklist to catch it before clients start complaining.

Every year, somewhere between late October and mid-November, the same complaint shows up in every lash group: “my retention has fallen off a cliff and I haven’t changed anything.”

That last part is the clue. She hasn’t changed anything. The furnace has.

What heating actually does to your air

Central heating doesn’t pull water out of the air the way a dehumidifier does. It does something sneakier: it warms the air, and warm air can hold far more moisture than cold air. Same water, bigger container — so the relative humidity drops, and relative humidity is the only number your adhesive cares about.

The swing is bigger than most people expect. A studio that read a comfortable 55% RH in September can read 38% by November with the windows shut and the radiators on — no leak, no fault, just physics. And because it happens over weeks, you adapt to it without noticing. Your hands learn the slower set. Your eyes stop registering it. The first hard data point you get is a client back early with half a set.

The failure it produces

Cyanoacrylate cures on airborne moisture. Take the moisture away and the cure runs slow and incomplete — the bond holds through the appointment, looks fine in the mirror, and releases at the first proper wash. Techs call these ghost bonds, and the full mechanism is worth reading: the slow set.

The signature that separates this from every other retention problem: nothing looks wrong on the day. No white bonds, no chalky residue, no obvious fault. Just complaints arriving around week two instead of the normal shed — and a calendar pattern. If your retention reliably softens in November and recovers in spring, the room is your suspect, not your isolation.

The October checklist

The whole point of knowing this in advance is doing something about it before the complaints start. Run this list in early October, while your room still reads normal.

1. Put a hygrometer at working height and log it for two weeks. Not on a shelf across the room — at lash level, where the cure actually happens. You’re watching for the trend, not a single reading: the day the heating comes on, the line starts moving. 2. Check temperature at the same time. A heated room usually isn’t a cold room, but a studio that’s heated intermittently — warm for clients, cold overnight — cycles your adhesive through conditions that slow the cure on their own. Dry and cold is the worst combination.

3. Have the humidifier ready before you need it. If last winter your room dropped below 45%, it will again. A humidifier running in the working room, started before your first client, is the direct fix — and the cheapest lever you have. Aim for 45–60% and watch the hygrometer, not the dial on the machine. 4. Check your adhesive’s age. Dry air makes a slow adhesive slower. A bottle that’s been open six weeks and a room at 38% stack on top of each other, and you won’t be able to tell which one is failing. Every bottle carries a date — check it, and go into the dry season on a fresh bottle so you’re only debugging one variable.

5. Say something to your regulars. Thirty seconds at the end of an appointment: your studio runs drier in winter, you’ve adjusted for it, tell her early if she notices anything. That converts a future complaint into evidence you know your craft.

The honest part

If your studio holds 45–60% RH through the winter — because you’re in a humid climate, or your building’s HVAC humidifies, or your humidifier handles it — you don’t need anything from anyone. No new formula, no new gear. The checklist above ends at step three for most people, and a humidifier is a one-time purchase that fixes a seasonal problem.
