The Other Number: What Room Temperature Does to Your Adhesive
Humidity gets the attention, but temperature moves your cure speed too — and a cold, dry January room is the worst combination in lashing. The 20–24°C rule explained.
Humidity gets all the attention in retention talk — including from us. But your hygrometer shows two numbers, and the second one moves your adhesive too.
Target: 20–24 °C (68–75 °F). Here’s what happens outside it.
Cold rooms: the hidden brake
Chemical reactions slow as temperature falls, and polymerisation is no exception. A room at 17 °C runs the same reaction as a room at 22 °C — just slower. Your dry time stretches, placement gets sloppy tolerance you didn’t ask for, and the bond that forms is weaker for the same reasons a dry room’s is.
The nasty part: cold compounds dry. Cold air also holds less moisture, so a winter room is usually both cold and dry at once — the two brakes stack. A January studio at 17 °C and 32% RH is about the most hostile environment lash adhesive can work in. If your winter retention is bad, assume both numbers are off until measured.
Warm rooms: the hidden accelerant
Above ~24 °C the reaction speeds up, and warm air carries more moisture to feed it. A warm, humid summer room pushes you toward shock polymerization faster than the RH reading alone suggests. If your room runs 27 °C at 62%, treat it as more humid than the number says.
Heat is also aging your bottle between clients — a sunny windowsill or a spot near a radiator shortens open-life meaningfully. Store the bottle away from both.
The practical rules
- Read both numbers every time you read one. They’re on the same device.
- Stabilise temperature before correcting humidity. A space heater or AC adjustment is cheaper than you think and changes the RH math — warm the room and relative humidity falls, cool it and RH rises, with no water added or removed. Fix temp first, then re-read RH, then decide.
- Client comfort ≈ adhesive comfort. 20–24 °C is also just a comfortable room. If you’re working in a coat or a tank top, your adhesive noticed too.

Our bands assume 20–24 °C — every formula’s dry time is quoted inside that window. If your room can’t hold it, fix temperature before changing formula: it’s the cheaper lever, and a formula matched to your RH at the wrong temperature is only half-matched.
